Abstract

Psychological realism in economics is conditioned by the irrational nature of the actions of an economic agent, and the irrationality of actions and decisions, in turn, is a consequence of cognitive distortions and behavioral patterns inherent in each individual. In fact, for decades there has been a debate on whether a person, as an economic agent, is rational in his actions and decisions or irrational. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to build economic methodology and methods of scientific cognition of economic reality for good reasons, the key of which is the answer to the question: is an economic agent rational or irrational? The object of research is economics as a kind of knowledge and a projection of human activity. The subject of the study is an economic agent and its actions conditioned by rationality or irrationality. The purpose of the study is to prove the need for psychological realism in economics as a concept that takes into account cognitive and behavioral prerequisites on an objective basis. The study reveals the content of psychological realism on economic grounds, considers behavioral economics and the existing cognitive distortions of an individual as key factors determining the irrational nature of a person. The results of the study: 1. The authors carried out theoretical analysis of various sources, conducted empirical research and identified a list of cognitive distortions, which determines the percentage of compliance of economic behavior and economic models with objective reality; 2. The main behavioral prerequisites that cause the irrationality of the behavior of an economic agent are presented.
