Romanova N.V. On the issue of the implementation of the ESG strategy by Russian companies: goals, ratings and key indicators

Abstract

The article discusses ESG ratings of Russian companies, issues of compliance with ESG principles, setting sustainable growth goals (SDGs) and, using the example of PJSC Novolipetsk Metallurgical Combine, the fulfillment of individual goals and objectives within the framework of the ESG strategy is evaluated. In the modern world, science, technology, and technology are rapidly developing - in general, this is due to the demand for increased production of products and services for the population and ensuring internal business turnover. At the same time, the connection between business and society is gradually being lost, as goals and objectives are being separated. The main goal of business is to obtain economic benefits, sometimes for the benefit of small groups of entrepreneurs who are unable to protect the population and the environment from the influence of negative factors. Until now, some enterprises use old equipment with a high degree of wear, others are not able to ensure waste-free production, and in this case waste is stored without complying with current standards and regulations or is completely “dumped into nature”, others, mostly “harmful”, emit a huge amount of harmful substances into the atmosphere. And the list goes on. All this is becoming an exorbitant “burden” on society and the environment. Moreover, in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to control these undesirable processes.An ESG agenda has been announced as one of the ways out of such a difficult situation. According to the authors, in case of effective implementation of this project, it will be possible to significantly improve the situation in the world due to the strong interaction of social policy, society and corporate governance.Purpose: to show how and for what reason modern companies form ESG programs, adhering to ESG principles. Methods: when writing the article, such theoretical methods as concretization, generalization, analysis, and analogies were used.Results: within the framework of this article, an assessment of the implementation of individual goals and objectives within the framework of the ESG strategy by the Russian company PJSC NLMK in 2021 – 2022 has been carried out.
