Abstract

The article analyzes the functioning, main characteristics and criminogenic risk of cryptocurrency. The concept of cryptocurrencies suggests that they are purely digital and non-physical in nature, representing a new stage in the evolution of money dematerialization, a virtual financial instrument attractive to criminals. It has been established that the integration of virtual currencies into the mechanisms of money laundering in the drug business is noted by all researchers, but the assessments of experts and scientists regarding their criminogenic potential are ambiguous. The author identifies the main mechanisms for the legalization of cryptocurrencies obtained during drug trafficking, examines possible directions for the development of AML/CFT response models in the context of digital transformation of the economy. It is concluded that the most promising option for countering the mechanisms of money laundering in the drug business is to use the technical capabilities of blockchain technology, but specific technical, organizational and regulatory solutions have yet to be found.
