Shipitsina Yu.M., Gorbunova O.I. Development of climate projects in Russian oil and gas companies while achieving decarbonization goals

Abstract

 In recent decades, one of the most important global problems of mankind has been the problem of climate change. A sharp increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as a result of the use of traditional hydrocarbon raw materials as the main source of energy production by industrial companies in most countries of the world is considered as the main cause of climate change on the planet. Therefore, the development of solutions to achieve ambitious goals of decarbonization of national economies is an urgent task of modern society. In this regard, the purpose of the study was to analyze the current situation in Russia in the field of carbon regulation and evaluate the accumulated experience of implementing climate projects in the country’s oil and gas companies. The legislative basis for the formation of a climate strategy in the Russian Federation is considered, taking into account the agreements reached at international summits and conferences on climate. It was noted that high interest in the implementation of solutions to reduce climate risks as a result of economic activity is shown, first of all, by companies of the country’s oil and gas complex. The implementation of climate projects is a reliable way for oil and gas companies to achieve carbon neutrality. The characteristics of these projects within the framework of natural solutions are given. The experience of the largest oil and gas companies of the Russian Federation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing climate risks according to the strategies developed in these companies in the field of preserving the planet’s climate is presented. It is concluded that climate projects can serve as one of the real tools for achieving key decarbonization indicators in Russia. The most promising of them include forest-climatic projects.
